The description column is causing havoc!!

Problem:

When I view ads in a category or on the home page the entire page is broken. I think it might be because I allow the use of the Rich Text Editor or that I allow html in the description. What is wrong?

Solution:

In order to allow the use of the Rich Text Editor or if you allow any html to be placed in the description you have two choices with respect to the display of the description column while browsing.

1. Turn off the description column while browsing
2. Show all of the description while browsing

IF YOUR ARE DISPLAYING THE FIRST PART OF A DESCRIPTION WHILE BROWSING WE WOULD NOT RECOMMEND USING THE RTE. YOU BASICALLY SET THE NUMBER OF CHARACTERS TO DISPLAY OF THE DESCRIPTION WITHIN THE COLUMN. IF USING THE RTE YOU ARE BASICALLY ADDING HTML TO THE FRONT OF THE DESCRIPTION. THE CHARACTERS WITHIN THAT HTML COUNT AS CHARACTERS. IF YOU HAVE SET THE SCRIPT TO DISPLAY THE FIRST 50 CHARACTERS OF THE THE DESCRIPTION AND THE FIRST 50 CHARACTERS ARE "HTML" CHARACTERS NOTHING WILL BE DISPLAYED WHILE BROWSING. YOU ALSO RUN THE DANGER OF CUTTING OFF THE HTML IN THE MIDDLE OF AN HTML TAG...COMPLETELY JUMBLING THE DISPLAY OF THE BROWSING TABLE.

For example:

Let's say you show 10 characters in the description column and you allow RTE or html.

What the browser might see if either is used:

The first table row tag was cut because it exceeded the 10 characters. This break in the html can distort the entire page.
